Directorate of the Wenchi Agricultural Station on Thursday February 7,2019 petitioned the Wenchi Municipal Security Council over the encroachment of its land.
It said the development had reached alarming proportions and could not be allowed to continue.
In the colonial days a 365 hectares (912.5) acres parcel of land was acquired at Wenchi by the then government for agricultural purposes.
The land served as one of the Agricultural Stations established in the various different agro-ecological zones of Ghana.
About 100 acres of land have already been encroached.
The Management of the Station took several steps to curtail the encroachment by consulting, writing letters, held discussions with the stakeholders and custodians of the government lands and these include the Wenchi Municipal Assembly, Wenchi Traditional Council, Nana Wenchi Hemaa, Town and Country Planning Department,Lands Commission, Survey Department, Ghana Police Service and the BNI.
All efforts to stop the encroachment proved futile until October 24,2014 when the Regional Director of Town and Country Planning (TCPD) responded to one of our letters written to him on 6th September,2010 in connection with the encroachment portion of the petition reads.
The Management of the Station is humbly appealing to the Wenchi Municipal Security Council to come to their aid by constituting a committee of enquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the encroachment.
Mr Robert Arthur Director of the Wenchi Agricultural Station led delegation to present the petition to Honourable Dr Prince Kwakye Afiriyie Chairman of the Wenchi Municipal Security Council and also double as the Municipal Chief Executive for Wenchi Municipality.
Honorable Dr Prince Kwakye Afiriyie assured the Wenchi Agricultural Station that steps would be taken to stop the encroachment.
