Wuogon Violence: I’ll appear before Short C’ssion – Sam George

Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo Prampram Sam George has said he will appear before the Commission of Inquiry set up to probe the violence that marred the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election contrary to the Minority’s position that it will not cooperate with the commission.

Mr Sam George was assaulted by some national security operatives who also shot into a crowd leading to the injury of 16 NDC supporters at the party’s candidate’s private residence at La-Bawaleshie during the by-elections on 31 January 2019.

The government set up a Commission of Inquiry chaired by a former Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Justice Emile Short to probe the shooting incidence.

Legal expert Prof Henrietta Mensah Bonsu and Mr Patrick K. Acheampong, a former IGP, are members of the Commission.

The Minority and the NDC said the commission is only an attempt by the government to set the perpetrators free.

While the General Secretary of the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketia described the setting up of the commission as a cover-up move, the Minority in Parliament said it “would not be part of any scheme to cover up or create immunity for the perpetrators,” since persons who appear before a Commission of Inquiry cannot be criminally prosecuted.

But reacting to a Facebook post by a private legal practitioner, Edudzi Kudzo Tamakloe who called on him to appear before the commission, Mr Sam George said: “I would be attending upon the Commission next week God willing”.

The commission began its public sitting on Thursday, 14 February 2019 and have one month to submit its report.
