I’m not a politician; I won’t join NPP or NDC – Adei

The Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) Professor Stephen Adei has revealed that he has no plans of joining the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) or the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) even though he admits he is not apolitical.

Prof Adei, who was given the appointment under the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) by President Nana Akufo-Addo, says he sees the position as an opportunity to serve the country.

However, he stated that: “If you give me a political position, I don’t think that I am called to be a politician. I’m not apolitical but I’m not a politician. In other words, if you want me to join NPP or NDC, I won’t join.”

He made the revelation while speaking in an interview with Benjamin Akakpo on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM on Wednesday, 17 July 2019.

He praised his predecessor Prof Kwesi Botchwey, who he described as a tutor and added that he accepted advice from both the Majority and the Minority in Parliament on his new job.

“One of my mentors is Kwesi Botchwey,” Prof Adei said, adding that he worked as Head of Research at the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) during Prof Botchwey’s days as Minister of Finance.

He said the NDPC did a fantastic job under the supervision of Prof Botchwey.

He was of the firm belief that the appointment of a Director-General of the NDPC “should not be politicised”.

For him, politicians must take their hands off the institution so it can function without manipulation.

He wants the NDPC to be a national think tank beyond what currently exists.
