The Chief Executive Officer of the North East Gonja district, Mr Alhassan Abdallah Iddi, together with the Minister of the Savannah Region, Mr Salifu Adam Braimah, on Monday, 22 July 2019, turned the lights on in five communities (Lantikpa, Kidengi, Tunga, Kanakulai and Kpalayili) in the newly-created district which have been connected to the national grid.
This falls under Phase I of the Rural Electrification project promised by President Nana Akufo-Addo to the chiefs and people of the Savannah Region.
The chiefs and people of the beneficiary communities abandoned their farming activities to hold separate durbars to celebrate the provision of electricity to their villages.
Schools in those areas were immediately connected to the national grid.
In an interview with the media, the North East Gonja DCE said the project is another fulfilled campaign pledged by President Nana Akufo-Addo. He assured the people of a 24-hour uninterrupted power supply.
According to Mr Iddi, the relevance and importance of the Rural Electrification Programme cannot be underestimated in the new district.
He emphasised that economic activities and living standard of the people would improve now that the area has power.
“Let me vividly remind you that it is the intention of the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to provide 100% coverage of the Rural Electrification Project to the people of this country,” he said.
The North East Gonja DCE disclosed that the recently-inaugurated Sinohydro Project in the Northern Region would enable the complete coverage of all municipalities and districts in the northern part of the country before the end of 2020.
