Over twenty-nine thousand people are living with HIV/AIDS in the Central Region, according to the Mfanteman Health Director.
Addressing the people of Mankessim in the Mfanteman Municipality of the Central Region during the celebration of the 2019 World AIDS day on the theme:”Community make the differences- help end AIDD, Mr. Martin Sumani Danko disclosed that currently (as at 2019) the country has recorded 3,340,713 people living with HIV/AIDS of which 1,171998 are male and 2,175,14 are also female.
Central Region as at now has recorded over 29,000 persons living with HIV/AIDS which is 1.84% of the total number. Mfantseman Municipality has also recorded 19,149 people living with HIV/AIDS which represents 3.72% of which 65% are female while 35% are male.
The Mfantseman Municipality is the second leading HIV/AIDS in the 23 districts of the Central Region.
The Municipal Chief Executive for the Mfanteman Municipality Hon. Kennedy Kelly Essuman in his address expressed worry over the staggering HIV/AIDS statistic highest HIV/AIDS in the Central Region and the fact that 97 people have died from the disease.
“Mfantseman is having a small population so if such large number of people are dying because of HIV/AIDS, who will replace us in the nearest future so I am appealing to all the people in the Mfanteman Municipality to take good care of themselves and abstain from lifestyles that will result in them contracting the disease.”
The Central Regional Minister Hon. Kwamena Duncan also advised the general public to do away with stigmatizing people living with HIV/AIDS and live well with them
“If somebody has been infected with HIV/AIDS that doesn’t end his/her life, but it is good that they attend hospital regularly for a check-up and anti-retroviral drugs which goes a long way to help them. We shouldn’t discriminate against people living with HIV/AIDS.”
Hon. Kwamena Duncan advised the students who were at the occasion to abstain from early sex and concentrate on the studies to ensure they are not infected with the HIV virus, urging them to use a condom if they know they can’t abstain yourself from sex.
