The Foreign Affairs Ministry says government will in due course update the public on the next phase of evacuation of Ghanaians stranded abroad.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Charles Owiredu during a press briefing on Tuesday morning, said the government couldn’t have allowed a full-scale evacuation of Ghanaian nationals because it would have triggered a chaotic situation amid the coronavirus scare.
“The government cannot make a decision saying all of these people should come in at the same time. It is going to be very chaotic if you look at the numbers… So the decision was taken that let’s start with those from Kuwait,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister said the various needs of Ghanaians abroad won’t be abandoned, but would be handled fairly to ease their frustrations.
“Missions don’t have the money that will be used for such situations [to cater to all Ghanaians abroad]. What we have asked the missions to do is that as and when these requests come…we quickly take action to make sure Ghanaians in such jurisdictions don’t suffer.”
Ghanaian nationals deported from Kuwait
Some 245 Ghanaians who were deported from Kuwait arrived in the country on a chartered flight on Saturday, May 23, 2020.
About 23 of them onboard were Togolese who were quickly sent back to their home country, after the Ghanaians disembarked.
The deportation of these persons comes at a time when Ghana has all its entry points closed as part of measures to stop the importation of the novel coronavirus in the country.
