The Minority in Parliament has called out President Akufo-Addo for calling for consensus-building by word of mouth with no action and further serves notice of an antagonistic 8th Parliament.
The group wants the President to back his talk with commensurate action in consensus building.
President Akufo-Addo in his final state of the nation address for his first term in office on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, stated that the results of the December 7 elections show Ghanaians want the two main political parties to work together in the interest of the state.
But speaking at a final leadership media encounter before the dissolution of the 7th parliament, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu disclosed the president has not made any move to engage the NDC or its flagbearer since the polls.
The Tamale South MP served notice the results of the Parliamentary elections put out by the EC can only mean a tough time for the NPP in the next parliament.
“What I can assure my friend [Majority Leader] is that it’s not going to be easy. I thought he’ll have some ministerial experience but once he has chosen to be in parliament you know it will be my time to pay back. When I see that he has no numbers in the chamber I’ll call for the votes. Those of you who understand mathematics that is why you need compromise and consensus-building. I heard the President since the election he himself publicly say that they will reach out and cooperate.
He added: “May I ask, what has he done since the election to reach out to the NDC and to reach out to HE John Mahama and the leadership of the NDC in the spirit of building this consensus and cooperation. I haven’t seen any concrete steps being taken by the President. But it is important that he does that when he takes even 40% of ministers from Parliament, Hon. Kyei Mensah will be lacking numbers on the floor and I’ll now let him appreciate what it means when you don’t have numbers in the chamber. At every other time you’ll need a quorum per the 138 members which is the minimum needed to take a decision, I will remind him and the more important resolution of two-thirds Members of Parliament, we’ll bring it to fore.”
However, the Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu insists the NPP will constitute the Majority in the 8th parliament.
The Suame MP urged the NDC to abandon its litigious posture.
