An Accra High court, in a U-turn, has rescinded the bail granted to Mr Gregory Afoko, a suspect being tried for the murder of the governing New Patriotic Party’s Upper East regional chairman, Adams Mahama, in 2015.
The suspect was granted bail earlier by the same court presided over by Justice George Buadi but he was kept in custody for more than 100 days only for the same court presided over by Justice Merley Wood to rescind the decision on Monday, 15 July 2019.
Several individuals and entities including the Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa South, Dr Clement Apaak and the President of think tank Imani Africa, Mr Franklin Cudjoe, have questioned the continued detention of the suspect.
The Chief State Attorney, Marina Appiah Opare, argued in court on Monday that Mr Afoko will not make himself available for the trial if he were released.
The counsel for Mr Afoko challenged the submission of the Chief State Attorney.
However, the judge ruled in favour of the Chief State Attorney and explained that the verdict was based on the facts available before her.
Mr Afoko's trial was adjourned to Wednesday, 17 July 2018.
