Allow Ghanaian traders cross over; You can shut borders afterwards – GUTA to Nigeria

Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) President, Dr. Joseph Obeng, says the Nigerian authorities can decide to seal off its borders, after allowing Ghanaian traders stranded to cross over.

Speaking on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM, Dr. Obeng said Nigeria has every right to uphold its national interest as a sovereign state, however pleaded “our goods should be allowed to cross the frontiers first and then they can decide to shut their borders.”

Ghanaian officials are scheduled to meet Nigerian authorities over a crunch meeting to discuss reopening of the Nigeria-Benin border at Seme.

The meeting is to help both countries reach a middle-ground on how Ghanaian traders may easily cross the Nigerian-Benin border with their goods.

It’s expected that some announcement will be made after the meeting on Monday to bring relief to Ghanaian traders over the Nigeria border closure.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria border closure will continue until January 2020, a memo from the government of Nigeria to border control personnel has announced.

The memo said the closure has achieved tremendous success.

“I am directed to inform you that it is observed that despite the overwhelming success of the operation, particularly the security and economic benefits to the nation, a few strategic objectives are yet to be achieved.

“Against this background, Mr President has approved an extension of the exercise to January 31, 2020. Consequently, you are requested to convey the development to all personnel for their awareness and guidance,” it said.
