Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has directed shipping companies to suspend demurrage on cargoes till the end of the COVID-19 lockdown in the country.
The new directive will be retroactive to March 30.
In a Release by Executive Secretary of the Council, Hassan Bello said:”You are similarly directed to refund to the consignees or their authorized representative charges on demurrage already paid within the stipulated time.”
According to the Release, the suspension of the demurrage during this period is an incentive for owners of cargo to accelerate the process of taking delivery of their cargo.
“It is not and should not be an excuse to delay or abandon cargo at the ports. We intend to sanction erring shippers in addition to the demurrage due on the cargo within the period of the lockdown,” the statement added.
