I won’t be responsible for consequences of your vote – Clerk to Assin North MP-elect

The Clerk of Parliament, Cyril Kwabena Oteng Nsiah Esq, has left the fate of the injuncted Member of Parliament-elect for Assin North in his own hands should he (MP-elect) go ahead and vote in the election of a Speaker for the 8th Parliament.

He publicly cautioned that the MP-elect, Mr Gyekye Quayson may choose to vote but will face consequences.

The Clerk had earlier stated that he is unable to recognize the MP-elect after confirming on the floor of Parliament that he had received an order from the Cape Coast High Court injuncting Mr Gyekye Quayson from holding himself as NDC MP-elect for the constituency over dual citizenship.

But the Clerk subsequently stated that upon consultation with both Leaders of both sides- Haruna Iddrisu and Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu he’s decided to let Mr Gyekye Quayson make his own decision, adding that should he vote, the MP-elect will be in contempt of court.

Earlier, the Deputy Leader of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) caucus in Parliament Alex Afenyo Marking raised issues about the presence of Mr. James Gyekye Quayson on the floor of Parliament ahead of the inauguration of the 8th Parliament on the dawn of 7th January 2021.

The Clerk disclosed that he was duly served with the court document at 4:55pm Wednesday afternoon hence he’s unable to recognize the MP-elect.

Both the NPP and NDC have 137 MPs each, and one independent MP making up the 275 Members of Ghana’s Parliament.

Both parties have proposed their nominees for the Speaker position. NPP has picked incumbent Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mike Oquaye while the NDC has settled on immediate-past Second Deputy Speaker, Alban Bagbin.
