Investigate ballot box snatching, Military invasion of Parliament – Mahama

The Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) John Mahama has called on Parliament to conduct an investigation into the incident where the MP-elect for Tema West, Carlos Ahenkora attempted to snatch ballot papers during the election of Speaker for the 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

He’s further called for investigations into the invasion of the Chamber of Parliament by armed military personnel during the chaotic scenes in the House.

The high stakes election of the Speaker of Parliament for the 8th parliament turned chaotic at dawn causing balloting to stall for almost 4 hours.

The process recorded numerous scuffles with the third breakout triggering a bizarre situation where armed soldiers stormed the chamber to restore order.

However, there was a push back from the NDC caucus who asked the military to exit the House amidst the singing of the National anthem.

Former President Mahama in a statement condemning the happenings stated that “the recent use of the military in civil democratic processes has become a major worry and gives the impression that this administration is continually seeking to resurrect the exorcised ghosts of our military past.”

He added that appropriate sanctions must be exacted after the two incidents are investigated.

Mr. Mahama said, “the events of last night stretching into the morning of 7th January have been both a great occasion for Ghana’s democracy and at the same time a day of infamy, which will go down as a low point in our democratic practice.”
